Budget Web Hosting Round Up
by Adam Jan

As the name implies, Budget Web Hosts are generally for customers with a limited budget to spending on hosting. This a good option if your website has relatively small traffic and you do not require many extra features. A budget hosting plan typically costs less than $10/month, with some going quite a bit lower. To keep the cost down, the typical budget plan includes modest disk space and bare-bones site management tools. Additional features may include domain hosting, e-mail accounts, and a basic control panel for managing the website.

Of course, budget hosting doesn't exactly mean cheap web hosting. Designed to be for a customers on budget, the budget plans are designed to meet the basic hosting needs for a small bandwidth site number of pages. A budget plan is the entry level plan offered by a reliable web host provider using modern equipment and is located within a state-of-the-art data center. This includes high speed connections to the Internet backbone and power backup system. These networks are designed to reduce as many single points of failure as possible. The result is a fast and dependable service, despite the low price.

Check list for Budget Hosting
There are a number of things you should look at in evaluating any budget hosting plan:

Disc space. How much space on the server harddrives will be allocated to your website? How much will you need in the next year or two? A large website with a considerable photo gallery or downloadable files may not fit into all of the budget plans.
Traffic. Budget hosting plans typically include a restriction in the amount of data that you can transfer each day or month. This traffic limit is expressed as the number of Gigabits transferred. Large, popular websites with many images will eat through GBs fairly quickly.
Platform. Budget hosting plans are available on both the Unix/Linux and Windows platforms. Some companies even support both platforms.
E-mail accounts. How many e-mail accounts can you create for your web site?
Website management tools. Does the plan include the use of a web-based control panel for managing the website and e-mail accounts? What features does it offer? Which features are only available in the more expensive plans?
Extras and upgrades. Web hosting providers are always looking for new features they can offer clients. Which features are included with the entry-level plan? How much will it cost to upgrade to the next level of features and services?

On the other hand, there is also a checklist of warning signs to consider when evaluating a budget web host:

1) Unlimited bandwidth. Bandwidth costs money. There is no such thing as "unlimited" bandwidth, so be very cautious of companies that claim to offer it.

2) Unlimited disc space. Like bandwidth, there is no such thing as "unlimited" disc space. There is a limit. Read the entire offer carefully to understand what exactly will be provided to you.

3) Other limitations. A hosting plan with generous bandwidth and storage may hide many unexpected restrictions. Look for limits on things like file size and limitations on script support, databases, or FTP uploads. To avoid being disappointed, always read the entire agreement

Web Hosting 101: Confused by the web hosting terminology, here are the words and terms that web hosts and webmasters utilize. Learn the web hosting language!
Availability (Uptime)?
Refers to the amount of time within a 24 hour period a system is active or available for servicing requests. For example, if a hosting company says it is available 99.9% of the time, they are claiming that your web site will up all the time except for about 8 seconds each day. Over the course of a year, in this example, the hosting company is claiming that your site will only be unavailable (couldn't surf to it) for 48 hours.
